Exercise 2

Read the text about Yuri Gagarin and his car. Look at the colorized photo. Describe the car and give your point of view about it. ( 60-80 words.)

                                      Yuri Gagarin and his Matra Djet

   On March 9, 1934, Yury Gagarin was born. In 1961, he became the first human to journey into outer space. Later, in 1965, Yuri Gagarin traveled to France, where he visited the rocket and space technology manufacturer Matra. The company was also manufacturing sports cars. While touring the factory, Matra-Bonnet Jet VS coupe caught the first astronaut’s eye. Back in Moscow, Gagarin has been presented with a Matra Bonnet Djet V S coupé by the French government. However, Gagarin rode his Matra Djet only a few times. Although, Gagarin was an international celebrity, and earned many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the Soviet astronaut was very humble and down to earth guy. He felt awkward driving this expensive sports car, because it was so exotic to regular Soviets.

After his death, the car was displayed in Star City. In the 90’s, Gagarin’s Matra Djet was sold to a Lithuanian car collector. Rumor has it, that someone attempted to steal it a few times.
